Origin of Huanarpo Macho
Jatropha macrantha, known as Huanarpo Macho, is native to Peru and grows abundantly in the Marañón River Valley and in Puno between 1,500–2,600 m a.s.l. Chroniclers report that Inca Sinchi Roca used it to enhance virility. The bark and roots contain sapogenins, steroids, flavonoids, essential oils, alkaloids and a high amount of proanthocyanidins (linked to phytochemical-rich and anti-arthritic activity; also studied for cardiovascular and anti-ageing support).
Traditional Uses
- Ethnobotanical applications in local cultures
- Potential use in respiratory support
- Considered for its composition of various phytochemicals

Research note: A 2003 mouse study used 5 g of ground Huanarpo Macho powder in 100 mL water as ad libitum drinking water; crude root and bark extracts showed antioxidant actions.
